How many do you need?

One barcode per product variant. Each version a customer can buy separately needs its own number.

One jar of jam has one barcode. The same jam in 250ml and 500ml is two. Three flavours in two sizes is six. A t-shirt in four sizes and three colours is twelve.

Retailers use barcodes to price items and to track stock, so a shared number across variations causes problems at reorder time. Barcodes never expire, so buying a few spares for products you haven’t launched costs you nothing but the one-off price.

You receive both UPC and EAN

You don’t choose between them. Each barcode is delivered as two print-ready images: a UPC-A version and an EAN-13 version.

It’s one number, not two. The EAN-13 version is the same number with a leading zero.

UPC-A is what retailers ask for in Canada and the US. EAN-13 is used across Europe and most of the rest of the world. Modern scanners read either version anywhere, so for packaging just pick the one your main market expects: UPC-A for Canada and North America, EAN-13 if you’re selling mainly overseas.

Because you have both, you’re never caught out when a new market opens up.

Using your barcode

Your barcode arrives as a blank number. It doesn’t contain your product name, price or company details; barcodes never do. The number is simply a unique identifier, and your product information gets attached to it later, in the retailer’s system.

Images are supplied at the standard 38mm × 25mm. Use the SVG or PDF file for print. Both scale without losing quality. You can reduce them to 80% of that (about 30mm × 20mm) if space is tight; below that, scanners start having trouble. Full specifications

When your retailer first receives the product, they scan the barcode and enter your product information into their system. From then on, your product name and price appear automatically at the checkout.
